NYRR Grete's Great Gallop 10K

BOOGIE DOWN BRONX RUNNERS CELEBRATE LEGEND GRETE WAITZ IN CENTRAL PARK

The Bronx Running crew joins NYRR family to honor the Queen of the New York City Marathon.

The amazing Boogie Down Bronx Runners laced up and represented the Bronx this weekend in Central Park for a special celebration honoring running legend Grete Waitz.

Alongside fellow members of *New York Road Runners (NYRR), the Bronx-based crew participated in NYRR Grete's Great Gallop 10K, the highlight of NYRR Member Week, a members-only run dedicated to the legacy of the woman who changed running forever. The event honors Ms. Waitz for her commitment to the art of running. Said Perez-Maymi.

For those who know running history, Grete Waitz is more than a name. The Norwegian icon won the New York City Marathon nine times, won the New York Mini 10K five times — setting road race world records in 1979 and 1980 — and later became the founding chair of the NYRR Foundation. She opened the door for women in distance running worldwide.

Saturday's run took place on that same historic Central Park course where Waitz made history, where thousands of NYRR members gathered to celebrate her life, her grit, and her grace.

"For us, it wasn't just a race. It was a pilgrimage," said Sandra of Boogie Down Bronx Runners. "Grete Waitz taught us that the art of running is about heart, humility, and helping others. That's what is the essence of BDBR philosophy. We run for health, wellness, fitness, and to become the best versions of ourselves. That's what Grete stood for."

The Boogie Down Bronx Runners, established in 2017, bring runners of all ages and levels together to learn the science and art of running. Their presence in Central Park this weekend was a reminder that the Bronx runs and runs with purpose.

"Winning isn't just about crossing the finish line first," the coach Perez-Maymi often says. "Coaching makes everyone who laces up and moves a winner, just for participating." On a day dedicated to a winner who made everyone else a winner too, the Bronx showed up.
